'Things Ain't What They Used To Be'. This is a jazz / blues /gospel piano tutorial. Again I have revamped/upgraded a previously posted Youtube video to take advantage of the higher quality video available now. I have added much clearer and more accurate notation and lots of annotations. The video and the transcription are free to download on my website at www.bushgrafts.com There is a great vocal version (has the introduction with lyrics added) by Carol Welsman on her 'Lucky To Be Me' CD - listen to a sample at http

Taking a Chance On Love - improvised solo piano lesson. This is another midi file created some time ago that I have reconstructed as an instructional video. It was done after listening to the great pianist/conductor Andre Previn's version on his solo piano Album 'Andre Previn Plays Songs By Vernon Duke' - but is not a transcription - I just stole some of his basic ideas! (like the little repeating figure at bars 8 - 16, the abrupt key change at bar 26 and the 'Stop time'thing on the out chorus.) I have annotated it - experimenting with labelled arrows to more clearly define the music being referred to. The transcription was created from the piano solo using a computer program. Be careful taking too literally the note values if you are reading the transcription. A free-to-download better quality version of the video(that can be clearly read - and without the clipping that Youtube has seemed to add to the audio) is at www.bushgrafts.com A printable PDF version of the transcription is on my instructional DVD (details on the above website). Click on http to see the Youtube video in better quality

You will definitely need to watch this in high quality to read the annotations added. youtube.com This is the 2nd time I have done this - see au.youtube.com for the other version. I used the same bass and drum track that I had recorded earlier. For an even better version go to www.bushgrafts.com.au - there is also a midi file there. A printable transcription (pdf file) is on my DVD - details on the website.

'If I Should Lose You' - jazz piano tutorial. I wonder why the sound quality on this is much worse than on the original I uploaded - even when played in HD, though it is a litle better. This is another fairly often played standard. It shows notation and keyboard views, as well as quite a few annotations describing some of the techniques used. Like all of these videos it is down-loadable (better audio free at www.bushgrafts.com along with the midi file. The printable transcripion is on my DVD.

'You Don't Know What Love Is'. Probably my most ambitious attempt to annotate a video lesson! I think that the transcriptions are improving, though I always see mistakes after I finish. This is a great song to play - the beautiful performance by 7notemode was inspirational www.youtube.com The second part of this video uses the Real Tracks option in Band in a Box to create a rhythm section accompaniment. All I had to do was to type in the chords, and the backing was created. Unlike a simple midi track, the bass and drums were created from sampled phrases - not just single notes. So some of the subtle nuances can be heard especially in the bass track. As always there is a copy of this video on my website free to download www.bushgrafts.com - but being quite a long track and in high quality, it will take a fair time to load unless you have a very fast connection. Another option might be to get my DVD http with copies of this video and also the printable transcription, and the backing track I created with Real Tracks. This video can be slowed down to better see the notation and read the comments. www.bushgrafts.com

'But Not For Me' - Solo Jazz piano lesson. For how to really play this try the version by Joe Chindamo (from Melbourne Australia) au.youtube.com By comparison this is rather pale! Nevertheless, with the added text comments, some students of jazz piano might get some ideas. Wouldn't it be great though, if some of the real greats did this - explain why they played this or that while improvising on a song that we knew well. It may br difficult to read the notation - a much clearer version (in stereo) is at web.newsguy.com If you want to see this or other videos in high quality video to see the notes clearly(and in stereo), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.

'Hymn To Freedom' - (Oscar Peterson) - jazz/gospel piano lesson. I have since found that there is a transcription of one of Oscar's versions. Those who are looking for a fairly simple one to play could perhaps play the first piano-only chorus of this. This was improvised from a basic leadsheet with chords and melody. This leadsheet, and a full printable transcription are on my DVD - for over 9 hours of video and over 140 transcriptions www.bushgrafts.com
